Give your mental health the attention it needs during the holiday season.
The transition of the seasons, temperatures dropping, and it becoming darker earlier can weigh heavy on a person’s mental health; when coupled with the holidays, this time of year can become overwhelming. This is especially true for our older population. The holidays are a weird time form any due to it the expectation of it being “the most wonderful time of the year”, but for some older adults, it is a season of loss. Whether its the loss of mobility, independence, traditions, or loved ones, the holidays can be some of the loneliest and most isolating times for our elderly, intensifying certain negative mental health symptoms.
During this time of year, looking out for negative mental health symptoms in yourself and those closest to you is important. Negative mental health symptoms can include: tiredness, lack of energy or motivation, tension, frustration, persistent sadness, changes in weight and sleep patterns, as well as a sense of loneliness and loss resulting in isolation. There are many ways to manage negative emotions and symptoms and even the simplest changes in routine can make a difference to our mental health. Some management techniques you can use are staying active, participating in any activity that raises your heart rate, reaching out and having a conversation with someone, and engaging in hobbies that bring you joy.
It is important to remember to give yourself and others some grace and cut everyone some slack. The holidays are hard and you can feel emotions other than joy. Whatever management tool works for you, finding the right support can make all the difference in a person’s mental health journey. If you or someone you know who could use some extra support, make it a priority to visit the Estuary where you can meet new people at our daily fitness classes, clubs, and lunches and if you’re in need of additional support, set up an appointment with our social worker, Micaela, through phone: 860-388-1611, ext.204, or email: socialworker@yourestuary.org.
